Today's trivia question. About whom did Nixon utter those immortal words? Hint, he's a current GOP darling and presidential candidate. The fuller context: Nixon considered him a useful idiot.

So Nixon didn't think Fred Thompson was that smart, back in the day. Pretty funny!
Of course, who ever said that "smart" is a big asset in electoral politics? No doubt Ol' Fred is smarter than the current occupant of the Oval Office.
Damn. I thought the answer was Jim Waechter. I wonder what Ol' Jim, one of my favorite people, ever, is up to. He was no fan of Nixon's (or Thompson's), so I figured Nixon was no fan of his. I remember a story about calling Thompson Nixon's water boy . . .
I'm just glad to see Fred finally get some negative press in the Tennessean, which has otherise been sucking up hard. This was a front pager, and the header on the flip included the phrase "Dumb, but Useful."
