Roberts is definitely not a mediocrity. But I don't think there's really a mediocrity on the Court today; nor has there been one for a very long time. One problem with these kinds of evaluations is that we compare actual people to mythologized figures of legend. It's like baseball players. Does anyone really doubt that the best players today are the best players ever? No. But when compared to "Ted Williams" or "Willie Mays," instead of the actual players T.W. and W.M., today's players don't add up. The same with justices. At least four of the contemporary Court's members are arguably "great" or "near great" justices. But no one ever says that. Because none of them is John Marshall . . . .

The case was Dickerson, so you were close.
