Is This the Analogy You Want?

Sen. Kennedy, on "Meet the Press," was asked by Russert whether the Democrats would filibuster the Alito nomination. Kennedy answered that that would be like the Buffalo Bills giving away their playbook before a game with the New England Patriots.

Egad. No one should ever compare themselves to the Buffalo Bills, the team that lost four straight Super Bowls.

Note to Kennedy: Compare the Democrats to a team with some good history, like the Pittsburgh Steelers. Compare the Republicans to the Dallas Cowboys. (Not the Patriots. Why go there?)

Ouch. As someone born in Dallas, who spent 25 years wholly committed to the cowboys (and then abandoned all of football for college hockey, but that's another story), the Republicans-Cowboys analogy hurts. I'm not saying it's bad as an analogy, just that it hurts.

Emery,

Russert is a big Bills fan -- my guess is that Kennedy was playing to this idea, so the point was more like, "Tim, as a Bills fan, would you give your arch rival your play book?"

The one factor no one has mentioned: O.J. played for the Bills. Frackin' O.J.

OK, I don't know where that's going.

Emery,

Is your use of 'frackin' an explicit Battlestar Galactica referencce, or a different usage of your own??

OK, maybe I should just let this frackin' thread die, but perhaps for Emery's and Kennedy's sake it's worth parsing Kennedy's thoughts one more time to make clear what I think his point was: "Timmy boy, would you as a Bills fan give me (as a Patriots fan who comes from Boston) your frackin' playbook?" In other words, Kennedy was associating himself with the Patriots, not the Bills. Maybe he didn't make the point clear enough, but he probably thought that most of Russert's viewers knew that Russert grew up in Buffalo and has been a long-suffering Bills fan (since he points this out about 5 times a week), and that he (Kennedy) was from Boston, MA and therefore was a Patriots fan.

Boy, Ivy is just trying to take the fun out of this post. Of course, he's right. I'm just saying, one should always be careful about the connotations of what you say.

And that's a BSG reference. Who says frackin'?
