Don't call it a comeback . . . .

Number Four

That would be Brett Favre, of course. Favre tied Dan Marino's career touchdown record yesterday in Green Bay--next week, unless the Packers get shutout, he'll break the record.

It's interesting if you think about it. Favre has a very strong arm. Indeed, his arm strength is legendary. But he is not a terribly accurate passer . . . so, how is it that he will have teh career record for TD's--a record that will be hard to top (he and Marino have something like 90 TD's more than the #3, Fran Tarkenton).

The reason Favre has the record is that he has rarely played on a team with an above-average running back, so Favre is throwing all the time. The current Packers don't have any running game at all.

I watched the game yesterday. Look at the stats. Favre had 45 passing attempts, with 28 completions--and 369 passing yards. The entire team, including Favre, had 13 rushes for 42 yards.

I'm not a purist on such things, but Vince Lombardi must be rolling over in his grave. Is this football?

I'll ask his daughter, who happens to be in my English 101 class, much to the husband's everlasting happiness. (Actually, it turns out she has few opinions about her dad. But still, cool, whatever the politics involved.)

I don't know, I think Favre is pretty accurate. His career completion % is slightly higher than Marino and Kelly, significantly higher than Elway. That may be a product of the "west coast offense" which he's played in his whole career, but I still tend to think he's pretty darn accurate, and also possessing of an incredibly powerful arm.

I think he's the best quarterback of all time, by the way.

The career completion percentage must be a function of the West Coast offense. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd see how Favre's career yardage compares to other QB's. But I'm lazy.

This post isn't to knock Favre. He's a warrior, to cite a cliche, and one helluva a football player. Which makes it rather ironic that he's playing catch most of the time.

Isn't Favre just a few INTs away from the record as well? He's a great QB and very entertaining, but I don't think of him as one of the all-time greats.
