Don't call it a comeback . . . .

HCR Buzzerbeater

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that health care reform will pass tomorrow (Sunday). I suspect that Pelosi has some votes in her pocket, a decent # of reps who don't want to put themselves in peril--and so have yet to declare--but will if called. They will get called. The tea-party bigots who shouted "nigger" at John Lewis and "faggot" at Barney Frank today will lose. America will win.

I usually don't follow politics as a sporting event, moment by moment. So I didn't see any news yesterday.

Imagine my surprise this morning when I check out a few website and realize I have to DIG THROUGH the NUMEROUS articles on how the pro-life people aren't happy before I can get to the story about HCR passing.

Crazy world we live in.

The reporting has Been odd, although that's not unusual these days. I was especially struck By the article in the Tennessean: GOP Condemns Racist Slurs, which spent a lot of time discussing how the RNC distanced itself from the Tea Party bigots and almost no time (indirect, late in the article) reporting the actual bigotry. And the lede wasn't even entirely accurate: the GOP encouraged the haters and then in some cases celebrated them after the fact.

One prediction I wish I had added but forgot: Stupak would vote Yes w/o getting much if anything in return. After the hits he's taken with the Dem base lately, he needed a high profile return to the fold. Michigan is not a state where the new health care will go unused.

All in all, a great day for the USA. I've been encouraged about our democracy in a way I hadn't been in a while--close to a year. This win seems hard earned.
