Double or Nothing
There's lots of commentary about the wisdom or efficacy of sending more troops to Baghdad. In terms of military strategy, this action is doomed to failure. But regardless of the prospects for success, President Bush must do it for domestic political reasons. He has lost nearly everybody--Democrats, independents, moderates, even the establishment chattering class (represented by Broder)--and he's in danger of losing his right flank, which is all he has left. They are loudly calling for more troops. It is the basis of the John McCain candidacy. The war architects at the The Weekly Standard and the American Enterprise Institute demand it. If these people are disappointed in Bush, he will have no one left. Bush's entire presidency has so far been based on never alienating the base. Remember, these are the Mayberry Machiavellis. So "double or nothing" it will be.

Didn't Churchill say something to the effect that Americans always do the right thing, but only after exhausting all other alternatives?
Well, welcome the the exhaustion phase. This may be bad for America, but I wonder if it might not actually be good for Dems insofar as it prolongs the shitstorm and undermines McCain's vaunted foreign policy credibility. If we simply start withdrawing and everything goes to the next circle hell (as it must regardless), then McCain can run in '08 by saying, "See, you should have listened to me! If we had increased troops by 30,000 we would have kicked ass and won." But if increasing troops merely prolongs and intensifies the shit then what has McCain got to say?
So what's with the dictation? Is #3 having trouble with the new beta blogger? Or has his carpal tunnel rendered him a disfigured freak who eats with his elbows?
There's no "nothing" here. There can only be a doubling -- a doubling of the maginitude of the loss of lives, money and credibility.
I hope TMcD and I don't inconvenience you (or rather Frances), but the tag at the end about the dictation is conjuring up images of #3 with a full body cast, dictating his blog comments through a straw...
Not a full body cast.
