The Times New Relationships Columnist
Does Ross Douthat have the experience necessary to lecture the whole frickin' world about relationships? Did I miss it? How long has he been married?
I especially like his quotation-marked use of the term "companionate marriage." Now, is that supposed to be a bad thing? That spouses actually, you know, think of each other as life companions?

As lame as Douthat's piece was, you should have read Sandra Tsing Toh's (upon which he was commenting): absolutely loathsome and awful. Her thesis: the reason her marriage failed must be because the entire instiution is stupid and impossible. It can't just be that, er. . . you know, she cheated on her spouse. Talk about narcissism. It was the kind of morally oblivious crap that makes a good democrat want to go join Focus On the Family.
Agreed. I found Toh's piece equally repugnant. For someone so intelligent, it was amazing how little self-perception she had. The whole piece seemed like an exercise in "unreliable narrator," but I'm sure she didn't intend it to be that.
